Report from Team Gresini about upcoming next round JEREZ

MOTO2: GP of SPAIN, Jerez, 01 - 03 April 2011

PIRRO AND TAKAHASHI LOOK TO BUILD ON QATAR RESULT AT JEREZ

The partial satisfaction of Team Gresini riders Michele Pirro and Yuki Takahashi for their results in the opening round of the season at Losail will provide them with all the motivation they need to improve this weekend at Jerez. Fifth place for the Japanese rider left him slightly disappointed after mounting a strong challenge for the podium but confident that he can meet his objective at the very next opportunity, especially given the form he showed at the Jerez circuit during preseason testing. Michele Pirro has less confidence and experience at Jerez but his determination to figure at the front of the Moto2 field will no doubt see him do that in the near future. His target this weekend is a top six finish and he certainly has the potential to achieve it.

Yuki Takahashi “I am determined to improve on our performance in Qatar. It was important to finish the race at Losail but I think fifth place was beneath my potential and that of the Moriwaki MD600. Jerez is a circuit I like, we went well there during preseason testing and in 2008 I finished on the podium in the 250cc race. We are working well and the team are giving me a lot of confidence. I am sure I can have a good season and this weekend I will be doing everything I can to give the guys their first podium to celebrate.”

Michele Pirro “At the end of the race in Qatar I wasn't particularly satisfied because I was sure I was capable of a better result but looking back I think we can say it was a decent start. It was the first time I had ridden at night and not having a warm-up before the race made things even more difficult. Over the first few laps I was guilty of 'falling asleep' a little when I was chasing Smith and I lost valuable time. It is all experience for me though and the result at Qatar is a decent starting point. Jerez is a circuit I like even though I don't know it particularly well but if you want to be a consistent frontrunner you have to like them all!”

Fausto Gresini “We could have maybe done better in Qatar but I was satisfied and proud of the riders and the team. I could see that the working environment was a positive one and there is an important relationship there that will help us get the best out of the Moriwaki MD600. Takahashi is already a Moto2 frontrunner and his fight for the podium in Qatar proved that. Pirro is making great progreess and his determination will soon ensure that he is fighting for top results. In Qatar we weren't at 100% but we will be working hard to be exactly that at Jerez. Things went well there over the winter tests and the data we gathered should allow us to be competitive.”

QATAR Race Report from QMMF

Bad luck for Al Naimi  strong finish for Al Malki and Cardús

The first Moto2 Grand Prix of the 2011 season ended with mixed emotions for the QMMF Racing Team. Whilst Qatari Mishel Al Naimi crashed out of his home Grand Prix on the very first lap after touching Santiago Hernandez, his Spanish team-mate Ricky Cardús scored a well earned 17th spot. QMMF Racing Team’s Wild Card entry Nasser Hasan Al Malki put on a great show and battled his way to 32nd place.

"For Nasser the target had been to finish the race and he did that, so we are all happy for him", said team coordinator Luis Soldano. "He really knows now what Moto2 is all about and it was a good experience for him. Mishel on the other side had a lot of pressure here in front of his home crowd. Today he was really motivated to get a good result, but those races are crazy and sometimes other riders make small mistakes, and this time he was unlucky and crashed. Ricky’s first ever race here in Qatar was very good. He was close to earn his first point, which would have been amazing." In a thrilling final, Cardús had missed the point rankings by just a couple of seconds.

Mishel Al Naimi - DNF

I had a good start and I felt fine on the bike, but in the first lap I touched another rider. I tried to overtake Santiago Hernandez in turn six, but I had to break hard because I was about to touch him and so I crashed. I feel sorry for my team and for myself as this wasn't a good start to the season. I wanted to find my rhythm and do a good race, but this weekend I just had bad luck. I will now focus on the next race in Jerez.

Ricky Cardús – 17th

I had a great start, with a good rhythm and all intentions to do well. But then it was difficult for me to maintain this rhythm. This is a fast track with a long main straight, and you need a lot of slipstream to keep up. Once I lost the draft of the group in front of me, I dropped back, and that disappointed me. We still have to work on our topspeed and on the aerodynamics of the bike in order to score better positions. Of course, 17th is not bad, but we are riders, and as a rider you want to win!

Nasser Hasan Al Malki - 32nd

It was a nice fight! I started from last position and I saw a couple of riders crashing in front of me, so most of all I am happy that I was able to finish the race. On the first lap I tried to push a bit more but there was a lot of traffic. After five laps I lost some grip on the rear and as soon as I recognized that I said to myself it would be the best to finish the race safely!

Race report from Gresini Racing Moto2

GP of QATAR - Race - 20/03/2011

POSITIVE START TO MOTO2 SEASON FOR TEAM GRESINI

Yuki Takahashi and Michele Pirro finished the opening race of the 2011 Moto2 World Championship in fifth and eighth place respectively in Qatar tonight – satisfactory results at a circuit that has proven to be a difficult challenge for the Moriwaki MD600 Team Gresini machine. It is a positive first step on a long road that concludes at Valencia in November.

Yuki Takahashi  (5°)It was important to finish the race tonight and I tried to do it in the best possible way. I got a good start but from midway through the race I started to feel the rear sliding and I lost a little feeling, which cost me a few positions and the opportunity to finish on the podium. Overall though I am happy and confident because I know that with this bike we can expect to do much better at the circuits to come.”

Michele Pirro (8°) “I am not happy because eighth place is never a result to be happy with but we did our best tonight. The chassis set-up was good but we were losing a bit of top speed and with a straight as long as the one here at Losail it cost us vital ground. I lost contact with the lead group over the opening laps and even though I recovered it wasn't enough to challenge for sixth place, which I think was within my reach tonight.”

Fausto Gresini “For a first race it hasn't gone bad. Last year we took fifth place here and tonight we got a fifth and an eighth, which is positive. Obviously a podium would have been better but I am satisfied all the same. We knew tonight was going to be a difficult race because we weren't quite as well prepared as we would like but unfortunately that was the maximum we were capable of on this occasion. I was impressed with Yuki and Michele was the top rookie so we have to think positive and look forward to the next race.”

MOTO2 GP of QATAR - Free Practice - 17/03/2011

TAKAHASHI IMMEDIATELY ON THE PACE IN QATAR

Team Gresini began its defence of the Moto2 World Championship title tonight in fitting style as Yuki Takahashi took a leading role in the first free practice sessions of the season. The Japanese rider, with his heart and mind on the devastation in his homeland, produced a determined and dedicated performance to clock the fastest lap of the opening night in Qatar. His new team-mate Michele Pirro also made a positive start as he rode in floodlit conditions for the firs t time. Both riders continue their preparations for Sunday's race with a further free practice tomorrow evening.

Yuki Takahashi  ( 1st 2’ 401” 695) “What can I say? I am really happy with this first day. To be so strong in the opening Grand Prix of the season is an encouraging start. This is yet further proof of my relationship with this team, which is working really well. Today I was feeling very sad and thinking about my people back home in Japan. It is a terrible tragedy that I am struggling to get out of my mind and I found the first session hard tonight. Then I felt the motivation to have a good race so that I can dedicate it to my people and at that point everything changed. In the end I was able to set the fastest time of the evening. We still have work to do but my spirit has changed and now I am confident we can do well here.”

Michele Pirro (7th 2’ 02” 498)
“The first time under lights was a little strange for me. After a few la ps I got confident and actually enjoyed it. I maybe could have gone a bit faster but there is a lot of traffic in Moto2. We have some work to do on the set-up of the bike but I am confident because we are working well and I think we can take a step forward before the race.”

Fausto Gresini “It has been a profitable day's work with a good result at the end of it. We know we can be competitive and this is the proof although there is still a long way to go. We struggled a little in the first session but then we found our way and the hard work paid off with good positions for both riders, especially Takahashi. So I am confident and we will keep working over the next sessions to make sure we are ready to fight for a good result on Sunday.”
