Remy Gardner finishes second in 2011 CMV 250cc Moto3 Championship

When Remy Gardner returned to Albacete Circuit this weekend it seemed a very long but triumphant way from his first ever road race there twelve months ago in the Honda NSF100
European Cup Final.

Taking second place in the final round of the CMV this weekend also put him overall second place in the 2011 Moto3 250cc Championship, an unexpected but truly satisfying finish to his first full season of road race competition.

“I can’t believe it really, said an ecstatic Remy after the race.  “At the start of the year Mum and Dad kept telling me that this is just a learning year and that I shouldn’t have expectations to win any races, and that to finish in the top ten at the end of the year would be a really good achievement.  But when I was winning the first race at Parcmotor before my gear lever broke I got the feeling I could do better than that, and then for the rest of the season I was really determined to try and win races.  I was so happy when I got second at Catalunya and then it was even better when I won at Parcmotor.  I’m so excited about moving to Spain next year and doing more racing, I can’t wait!” Remy added.

Things weren’t all smooth at Albacete this weekend, with Remy crashing in the second qualifying session on Saturday after trying too hard to take the fastest time.  His enthusiasm backfired when he lost the front end, but once again taught him a valuable lesson to take into the race. He started well shooting into the first corner in equal first place with championship winner Maria Herrera.  It wasn’t long though until the 2-strokes caught the 4-strokes and after a couple of big slides Remy decided to try and maintain his position with some cautious and sensible riding.  Albacete proved to be a 2-stroke track and Remy struggled to stay at the front of the pack, dropping back and fighting hard with a big group of eight riders for seventh place.  He rode over the line in seventh, but was the second Moto3 bike in the pack.

“What Remy lacked this weekend is time on the bike and track experience.  For his first year of road racing he’s done an incredible job and I’m so proud of him,” said his father Wayne today.

Maria Herrera once again finished the Moto3 race in first place today, while Marcos Ramirez-Fernandez took third.

The 2011 Moto3 250cc CMV Championship went to Maria Herrera (Spain), with Remy Gardner (Australia) in second, and Andrea Lahgi (Italy) third.

An exciting few weeks are ahead for Remy as he stays on in Spain to attend the Redbull Rookies Cup selection event at MotorLand Aragon.  After applying to try out Remy was
recently advised of his acceptance to the event, and Team Gardner Racing hopes he’ll be invited to join the Rookies in 2012 to enhance his proposed race programme, which will include stepping up to the Spanish Championship (CEV Buckler) competing in the Moto3 250cc GP class.

Remy and Wayne will fly directly from Barcelona after the Redbull Rookies try-out to arrive in Melbourne on the Friday night of the Australian Grand Prix, and will drive to Phillip Island early on Saturday morning in time for promotional appearances and the much anticipated display laps around the circuit with Wayne and Mick Doohan, in which Remy will launch the new Honda NSFR Moto3 bike to Australian fans.

“What Rem has learnt and achieved this year has been a real surprise to me,” said Wayne.  “He’s been so focussed in everything he’s had to do to make the racing in Spain happen, including keeping on top of his school work and studies, his fitness and his mental approach.  I’m very proud of his achievements on the track too, but what has impressed me most is his courage, passion and commitment to everything that goes with that.  Seeing kids at this age competing at such a professional level astounds me.  If I hadn’t seen it myself, I’m not sure I would have believed that a thirteen year old who had only ever competed in two road race events could learn so much in such a short time,” Wayne said, adding “the next few years are going to be such an exciting time for Remy and his brother Luca, and personally I’m having a great time riding on the coat-tails of their journey too!!”

Press Release from Team Gardner Racing - 5th September, 2011

Remy Gardner maintains Championship position after tough weekend

It was a tough weekend for young Remy Gardner who finished fourth on his Moriwaki 250 at Alcarràs Circuit yesterday.  And, when the dust settled on round five of the Campeonato Mediterráneo de Velocidad (CMV), he was able to maintain his second place standing in the 250cc Moto3 Championship.

“After winning the last race I was really determined to do well again this weekend,”
said Remy.  “I thought things were going good in the practice sessions and I was improving my times, but on race day it just didn’t work out for me.  The bike felt completely different on Sunday to how it was in practice and power was right down, I couldn’t understand it,” he said.

“We had two qualifying sessions on Sunday morning and then the race in the afternoon. From the beginning of the first qualifying session I knew things weren’t good when I lost the front end and had a small crash.  In the end I only qualified in 7th.  That was ok because I got a good start and got up to second place, but on about the 3rd lap the front end tucked under and I ran off the track trying to save it.  Luckily I held onto it and managed to run it through the dirt and back onto the track - but then I was in sixteenth place!  I nearly lost the front about ten times through the race and it didn’t feel good.  I just had to take it easy,” Remy added.

A number of small mechanical and set up concerns banked up throughout the weekend, including overheating in qualifying.  This coupled with translation issues Remy experienced with a new suspension engineer and the crash in qualifying all added to a dented confidence.

“All the problems Remy experienced this weekend is just part of racing.  Even at Grand Prix level I lost races because of a misunderstood communication with my team, or mechanical problems.  It’s all part of the learning curve.   Rem takes it really hard because he’s so focussed on winning, but learning to deal with the ups and downs of racing is a really important skill for him to acquire, and this is all part of it.  I can totally relate to his frustration, but as I keep telling him ‘that’s racing’,” said his father Wayne Gardner.

First place in the 250cc Moto3 class this weekend was Championship leader Maria Herrera who lead Andrea Laghi in second and Gabriel Enrique Ramos Yanes in third.

Press Release from Team Gardner Racing 29th September, 2011

Team Gardner Racing on the move

In January 2012 Team Gardner Racing will relocate to Barcelona Spain in order for junior riders Remy and Luca Gardner to seriously pursue their motorcycle racing. “We’ve been talking about it for a while,” said World 500cc Motorcycle Champion Wayne Gardner whose sons Remy and Luca started their first full season of road racing at the beginning of this year.  “Remy has been commuting to Spain to compete in the Mediterranean Championship (CMV) and his results to date have far exceeded our expectations.  They’ve both also competed in Australia in the National Motorcycle Road Racing Development Association (MRRDA) Championship, and dirt track events.  The real competition is overseas and if the boys want to improve it’s the move we need to make,” Wayne added.

Ending their Australian road racing season, Team Gardner Racing competed in their last Australian based event on the weekend at Broadford Victoria.  In the final round of the MRRDA Remy finished 3rd behind Matt Barton and Zac Zanesco in the 80cc 2-stroke class, while his younger brother Luca secured 4th in the 70cc ‘Nippers’ class behind Troy Gunther, Lawson Walters and Mitch Simpson.  “I rode some of the toughest races of my life last weekend.  We were riding consistently under the lap record all weekend but I kept over-riding my Moriwaki 80, crashing once because I really wanted to win,” said Remy.  “In the end I realised I couldn’t compete with the newer bikes without riding dangerously and I thought it was more important to go to Spain without any injuries today for my CMV race next weekend,” he added.

Luca displayed his fighting spirit in the last two races of the weekend.  After perfecting his starts he was able to mix it with the top four, all producing exciting racing for the spectators.  “I had so much fun in those races.  They were all 12 laps this time and so it was really good to get a lot of time on the track and get more experience.  The battles in the last races were really fun and I can’t wait to get to Spain next year and start training with Dad on a Moriwaki 250,” said an excited Luca.

Both Remy and Luca finished a respectable season in the MRRDA National Championship considering they were unable to make all the 2011 rounds, missing out on valuable points.  The races they did compete in however saw them both at the pointy end of the field in most events.

“Our Australian season wouldn’t have been possible without the generous donation of two beautiful Moriwaki race bikes which we modified to suit the junior classes. Western Australian industry identity Neil Dunn had no hesitation in offering me the use of his bikes when I was searching for two training machines.  The Moriwaki/Hondas have been an invaluable tool in the boys’ development. The hard work and dedication of engineer Tony Hatton who rebuilt the bikes with Honda parts and supported us at all the races has also been a major contribution to the team’s success, “ said Wayne.

Team Gardner Racing still has a number of important races to concentrate on this year, including three more rounds of the CMV in Spain at Alcarras, Albacete and Valencia circuits where Remy is currently running 2nd in the championship.  Luca will also compete in the NSW Dirt Track Championships in September and both boys will contest the Australian Dirt Track Championships in October.

Wayne said, “we’re currently working on some really exciting opportunities in Europe next season but our focus is still on finishing the year strong in all our current race programs.”

Immediate Release from USGPRU - 30th May 2011

Heiser, Das, and Zayat Smoke the Field at Summit Point

Summit Point, West Virginia - 30 May 2011 -  Round 3 of the USGPRU National Championship headed for the historic Summit Point raceway to join the CCS/ASRA series for what would turn out to be a blistering hot Memorial Day weekend of racing!

The first USGPRU race of the weekend was the Moto Liberty / RS-Taichi 250GP race, and it was completely dominated by young Cassidy Heiser.  Cassidy is a Summit Point regular and showed off his local knowledge by pulling out an amazing 3-second lead on lap one.  Once pole-setter Brian Surtees overcame a bad start, he caught and passed Mike Aboyoun for second place.  He set his sights on Cassidy, and was even able set the fastest lap of the race, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap to Cassidy who rode a flawless race to the finish line and his first USGPRU National victory. Mike Aboyoun held on to Surtees draft for a few laps, but eventually drifted back to finish comfortably in third place.

The Pilot Moto3 race was the next race up and to no one’s surprise, the 4-stroke Moriwaki’s MD250H’s rocketed off the line at the start ahead of their 2-stoke counterparts.  The USGPRU newcomer, Casey Tobolewski, led the field into turn one followed closely by ‘Mad’ Max Flinders and Alex Wisdom.  Reet Das and John Hjelm, both riding Honda RS125s, caught the front runners and passed them on the back section of the track. Casey and Max held on to the new leaders for a few laps, but the long front straight was too much of an advantage for the more powerful Hondas, and they watched the leader pull away. Hjelm stalked the race leader Reet Das for the rest of the race.  He would fade back for a lap, then pull Das back in.  He tried to set Das up for a last-lap pass at the line, but fell a few horsepower short when he popped out of the draft in the dash for the finish line.  Das held on to win his first ever USGPRU National race.  The battle for third place was far from decided as the Honda RS125 mounted Dave Celento caught up with the young racers on their Moriwakis.  The three had a great battle for the final podium spot, but Celento eventually powered past the Moriwakis to capture 3rd place over Max Flinders.

The final race of this blistering hot weekend was the REV’IT! Sponsored, Moriwaki MD250H Powered by HONDA race.  The spec-bike class is made up entirely of young hopeful superstars trying to make their name in roadracing and claim some of the $10,000/weekend purse posted by American HONDA.  The race got off to a great start with young Xavier Zayat quickly taking the lead into turn one.  He put on a great show of skill as he proceeded to walk away from the rest of the pack, gapping the field by 2 to 3 bike-lengths just through the turn 1 and 2 section.  The battle for second place was far from over as ‘Mad’ Max Flinders duked it out with newcomer Casey Tobolewski.  Max led for the first half of the race, with Casey taking over on lap 5 of 9.  Casey stretched out a 1.5 second lead over Max only to see that lead cut to shreds on the last lap as the local wildlife (groundhogs) ventured onto Casey’s racing line causing him to brake early into turn 5. Max passed Casey entering the carousel section of the track and held on for a nearly side-by-side finish at the line.   After the race, Casey was overheard mumbling in his best Carl Spackler voice, “I smell varmint.  And the only good varmint, is dead varmint.”  Another similar battle raged on for 4th place between Alex Wisdom and Chris Kosan with Wisdom likewise narrowly holding on to the 4th place position.

In the post-race awards, Eric Moore, Sharad Shanbhag, and Nick Kosan each won a Motion Pro Pivot Head Hex Key tool set. Max Flinder, Sam DeJong, and Casey Tobolewski each won Motion Pro’s Deluxe Piston Pin Puller tool kits as well.  Reet Das, Casey Tobolweski, and Nick Kosal also won gift certificates for discounts on Pilot Leathers.  And the big prize of the weekend went to Reet Das as he won a QStarz GPS lap timer, recorder, and analyzing tool from RS Cycles.

The USGPRU thanks all of its sponsors that help to make it possible for us to keep coming out and doing what we love to do. Without your help, many more racers wouldn’t be able to afford to come out and live the GP dream.  Thank you RS Cycles, Motion Pro, Moto Liberty, Pilot, REV’IT!, HONDA, Impact Armor, and RS-Taichi.  We also have great contingency support from EBC, Silkolene, Dunlop, Bridgestone, and Michelin.  Thank you all!

Press Release from Racing Link - MORIWAKI 250 4T

TROFEO MORIWAKI 250 4T, GARA: LOCATELLI REPLICA SU PISTA BAGNATA

L’unica a provare a tenergli testa è stata Martina Fratoni.

MARTINA FRATONI, 2° classificata. “Sull’acqua non mi trovo molto a mio agio e oggi era fondamentale non finire in terra. Il secondo posto mi soddisfa e speriamo di far meglio alla prossima”.

FRANCESCO MAGRO, 3° classificato. “Ho corso quasi tutta la gara senza una manopola e alla fine sono riuscito a conquistare il mio primo podio. E’ una bella sensazione, spero di continuare così per tutta la stagione”.
